Grinder ?
-
I saved a old heavy duty General model “D” grinder out of my friends barn. I have used it several times and it is a beast!! But I Just noticed that there Is no washer or bushing that goes on the Auger shaft. I can see that the brass insert that is inside of the auger holder Is bright and shiny which tells me it is wearing out. I was just curious what is in on all of your augers and where I could get one if needed. The auger shaft has a 0.74“ OD
I just want this grinder to last.

chippewa I’m quite sure the brass washer is the original thrust washer for the vintage they didn’t use nylon back then. The brass will get polished up while doing it’s job. I’m sure a nylon one will work fine if it’s the same thickness.

chippewa we lost our thrust washer once, in a pinch we just made one outta a 5 gallon bucket lid…I think we still use it like that

blackbetty61 (Or anyone). do you just have 1 nylon washer on your auger? Or multiple washers? Mine has nothing now. I am sure it was lost before I got it
-
chippewa just one I’d say it’s probably 1/8 in thick…the one we use is a Hobart though
-
blackbetty61 thank you. That is what I was looking for. I will get one ordered.

i would recommend a paper/fibrous type washer for that older style grinder, they heat up less than nylon. in general having a washer on that worm is going to better press the knife into the plate and give you a cleaner grinder.

sailfaster I got a nylon one and it is to thick. The plate is sticking out past the notch. I would assume the fiber ones will be as thick also. Going to try the Nylon bucket lid trick.
