cdavis I am in the same boat.
I love good sauerkraut and have had some pretty good homemade, but have never had any better than Farman’s Barrel Cured Sauerkraut. It comes in a glass jar, reasonably priced and a great product. Each year I make whole head sauerkraut because of the distinct taste it has but don’t think it would be worth my effort to try and beat Farmans.

I really like to make my own
Some I make fairly mild to eat straight out of the jar, others I ferment longer and cook with sausage or hot dogs

A Saxon German tradition I grew up with is Pork
Chops, Pork Roast, Cabbage Roles or Pork Sausage, all smothered in sauerkraut and baked and always served with mashed potatoes or hot German Potato Salad
